Dental Inlays and Onlays
Compared to full dental crowns, dental inlays and onlays are used for a more conservative approach to restoration. They can repair teeth that have mild or moderate decay damage, or teeth that have cracked and do not need a full crown. Porcelain, composite resin and sometimes gold can be utilized to create inlays and onlays. As the graphic above illustrates, inlays refer to procedures where the bonding material is only at the center of the tooth, while the onlay procedure has bonding material that extends to the cusps of the tooth.
What are the benefits of inlays and onlays?
- Natural look: Inlays and onlays have a natural tooth color that makes them virtually invisible compared to metal fillings.
- Great fit: Inlays and onlays will not expand or contract based on temperature like metal fillings.
- Longevity: Inlays and onlays can last up to thirty years, longer than any other type of filling.
- Minimal tooth structure removed: Inlays and onlays require the minimal removal of a tooth’s surface, helping to preserve the maximum amount of healthy tooth structure while restoring decayed or damaged areas.
How it’s done:
Usually two visits will be required for the placement of inlays and onlays. At the first visit, your Bridgewater dentist will take an impression of your tooth that will be sent to the lab. Before you leave, a temporary inlay or onlay will be placed to protect the tooth. On your return visit, the permanent inlay or onlay, freshly received from the lab, will be placed and fitted for a perfect bite.
